BIO

Jason van Bruggen is a world-class commercial director and visual artist known for emotionally grounded, cinematic storytelling rooted in real human experience. His work brings a near-documentary process to advertising—capturing authentic moments, cultural truth, and a strong sense of place—while championing stories of underdogs, outsiders, and those who keep pushing forward. His films are visceral and immersive: visually iconic yet emotionally raw, challenging expectations of what advertising can feel like.

He directs and photographs campaigns at the highest level of craft for some of the world’s leading brands, including Apple, Adidas, Samsung, KLM, and OnePlus, while consistently carving out space for the obscure, the unexpected, and the quietly powerful. Jason’s advertising work is defined by ambition, emotional credibility, and scale. Whether directing global brand platforms or intimate, character-driven films, Jason seeks deeply human narratives—often in remote or demanding environments—while maintaining a modern, restrained visual language. His work connects brand purpose to lived experience without sentimentality or artifice. Jason was named one of the Top 10 Commercial Directors in the World by the Cannes Lions Talent Report (2023) and recognized as one of the people shaping the future of creativity. His recent work for Adidas received top honors on Fast Company’s “50 World Changing Ideas” list. His work has earned over 20 Cannes Lions—including two Grand Prix—alongside multiple Clio Gold Awards, a Clio Sports Gold, One Show, ADCC Communication Arts, Applied Arts, Shoots and PDN awards and international recognition for socially impactful campaigns. Jason’s passion for storytelling at the edges of the world has led to collaborations with brands including Canada Goose, Patagonia, and Arc’teryx. His fine art practice is supported by large-scale commissions from Fortune 500 companies, governments, and institutional and private collectors. His 2025-26 exhibition, commissioned by the Royal House of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, documents 80 stories of survivors of WWII. It is part of the permanent collection of the Frisian Museums. His work has been profiled by National Geographic, Sports Illustrated Fast Company, Outside Magazine, The Explorers Journal, Communication Arts and many other publications. His films have aired globally on CNN, BBC, PBS, CBS, CBC, and SRF1, and have screened at some of North America’s most prestigious film festivals.

Jason has traveled to more than 150 countries as an international development worker, professional adventurer, and military contractor—experience that brings uncommon perspective, logistical confidence, and calm leadership to complex productions. Jason holds a Master’s degree in History from Queen’s University, is a Fellow of the Explorers Club and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and was the closing speaker at TEDx 2021: Uncharted.
